Cvan's Unofficial GOLF+ Guide

In my role as a Caddie Moderator on the GOLF+ Discord, I've seen lots of questions posted about various aspects of the game. This is an Unofficial Guide that I created for the GOLF+ community to help you get the most out of the game. It's a work in progress and will be updated as needed. Enjoy! @Cvan65

Buy an External Battery or Battery Strap

This game (and most other Quest games) eat up battery life very quickly. Without an external battery, you may find yourself running out of headset power before a multiplayer round is over. There are many options, the most economical being to purchase an external battery, affix it to the top of your headset strap and run a 1 foot USB cable from the battery to the headset.

There are also headstraps that have a built in battery. The popular ones are the Meta Elite Strap with Battery, BoboVR products, and others. Some of these straps come with multiple batteries that magnetically attach to the strap so you can quickly swap them on the fly.

If you're considering a battery pack, you can always ask for opinions on the GOLF+ Discord, but at the end of the day, it's about your own budget and what exactly you are looking for.

Quest Games Optimizer

Quest Games Optimizer is a 3rd party paid app that you can sideload onto your Quest headset. It contains profiles for just about every game available, and these profiles are heavily tested by the developer before release in order to push games to the best resolution possible without performance drops.  GOLF+ players that use this tool report that it improves the visual quality of the game.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Since this is a 3rd party app, GOLF+ does not endorse or support this tool. Users install and use it at their own risk. If you experience problems in GOLF+ while using this tool, please contact the developer of QGO for assistance. Additionally, if you experience bugs/glitches in GOLF+ and QGO is running, relaunch the game without running QGO and see if the behavior persists. If it does, report it as a bug on the GOLF+ Discord.

You can read all about QGO here: Quest Games Optimizer

NOTE: If you choose to install this and you are on a Quest 3, do not use the in-game graphics quality slider. You need to use one or the other or will have unstable behavior.

Getting Started

For Beginners: Golf Terminology: Scoring

Par: Refers to the number of strokes a golfer is expected to need to complete the play of one hole on a golf course. Every hole on a golf course is rated as either a par-3, a par-4, or a par-5 (par-6 holes also exist, but they are rare).

Birdie: A score of one under par on a hole.

Eagle: A score of two under par.

Albatross or Double Eagle: A score of three under par (very rare).

Condor: A hole in one on a par 5. Incredibly rare.

Bogey: A score of one over par.

Double Bogey: A score of two over par.

Triple Bogey: A score of three over par.

Ace: A hole-in-one. Hitting the ball into the hole in one stroke.

Handicap: A system used to rate the average number of strokes above par a player scores in one round of golf. Your handicap is calculated based on your score and the difficulty of the course. Selecting more difficulty settings, like high wind, back tees, hard pins, etc, will result in a better handicap if you shoot the same score as if you had selected easy settings.

Greens in Regulation (GIR): Landing on the green in two shots less than par, like hitting the green in one on a par three, two on a par four, or three on a par five.

Fairway Hit: Landing on the fairway when hitting a drive on a par four or par five. Landing on the green or fringe also counts as a fairway hit.

For Beginners: Golf Terminology: Playing

Fore!: A warning shouted when the ball is heading toward a person.

Putt: Any shot taken by a putter when you are on the green.

Drive: Used to describe a golfer’s first stroke from the tee box on every hole.

Fade: Curving the ball left to right if you’re right handed.

Draw: Curving the ball right to left if you’re right handed.

Slice: Significantly curving the ball left to right if you’re right handed.

Hook: Significantly curving the ball right to left if you’re right handed.

Push: Hitting the ball right of your intended path if you’re right handed.

Pull: Hitting the ball left of your intended path if you’re right handed.

Big Dog: Another term for the driver.

Flat Stick: Another term for the putter.

Approach: The shot taken by a player from the fairway to the green.

Bank Shot: A shot where a steep slope is used to manipulate the direction or speed of the ball.

Over Clubbing: Using a club that will hit the ball farther than necessary.

Away: Refers to the ball that lies farthest from the cup when two or more golfers are playing. The player farthest away typically hits first.

Best Ball: A format of play typically used in tournaments, in which the team score for each hole is the “best score” of at least one of the players in a foursome.

The Turn: The halfway point in a round of golf.

Explosion Shot: A technique used by a golfer to hit the ball out of a sand trap.

Duff: A bad shot.

Mulligan: In casual play only, a “do-over” shot made to replace a poorly hit shot, taken without counting the stroke toward the score.

Hacker: A slang term referring to a person who is not very good at golf.

Fairway: A long stretch involving a neatly maintained grass which runs between the green and the tee box.

Rough: The taller grass that borders the fairway.

Green: The smooth grassy area at the end of a fairway especially prepared for putting and positioning the hole.

Hazard: Anything on a golf course that is designed to be hazardous to one’s score.

Bunker: A concave area containing sand or the like, considered a hazard.

Beach: Slang term for a sand bunker.

Casual Water: An accumulation of water on the golf course that is not part of a water hazard. Generally, you encounter casual water after heavy rains. The player is allowed to move the ball without penalty.

Out: The front 9.

In: The back 9.

I just got the game. What do I do first?

Welcome to GOLF+.

GOLF+ is a game that is so very close to real golf in so many ways, however, you are swinging a lightweight plastic controller or an attachment that is not a 1:1 replica of a golf club. You have lighting and reflections that may not be optimal for VR. Your floor may shift without you having any awareness. You are using a consumer grade headset and as good as tracking is, it is not perfect by any stretch. Your WiFi connection may hiccup or experience interference. Everyone is playing in their own unique conditions unlike a group all out on the course at the same time.

Employing a full swing in the game may result in tracking issues that are hardware related, not defects in GOLF+ A shorter backswing may be less realistic, but until the tech improves, it is what it is and you will have better results in the game. Pro controllers may mitigate this, but at a high cost that only players can decide the worthiness of that investment.

If you are using a Q3, it's advisable that you turn off hand tracking while playing to avoid kicking into the predictive AI and causing club weirdness.

If you find you are slicing every shot and have been playing golf for x years and never sliced before, please don't blame the game. Read the above paragraph again and appreciate it for what it is. A game. If it was broken, everyone would be experiencing the same problem. Golf is hard. This game is hard and comes with hardware limitations that are outside the scope of the developers to address.

All that being said, GOLF+ is currently the premier, VR-based golf game.  It can bring countless hours of fun with friends and/or solo, and give newcomers to golf a taste of what the real thing might be like.

Enjoy the game!

When you first load the game, you will be taken through a tutorial. Once you have finished the tutorial, here are some things to do first:

Wolf Creek - Kiawah Island - Pinehurst No.2 - Pebble Beach - TPC Scottsdale - TPC Sawgrass - TPC Southwind - Yale - The Old Course at St. Andrews - East Lake - Olympia Fields - Kapalua Plantation Course - Riviera - Bay Hill - Harbour Town - Quail Hollow

Calibrating Club Power

To calibrate your power settings, choose Swing from the Settings menu, Global, and then Calibrate. After you take three swings, the game will determine how much power assistance you need (or do not need) in order to get the full distance for each club. Distances given are total distance, not carry. You only do the three swings one time, after which each club will be set to optimal power for your swing. You can adjust the sliders individually for each club if you wish, or you can return to the Global menu and recalibrate at any time

About power assistance: Power assistance is designed to assist all levels of player to reach the advertised club distances. It will kick in fully when it detects your swing speed. This means that a strong swing with very high power assistance will work against you because the high setting results in the game expecting a slower swing. When it does not detect this, the power assist will not kick in.

The system was designed to prevent heavy hitters from maxing out the power to achieve extra long distances with a full, hard swing, while at the same time enabling those that need a power boost to play and enjoy the game. The way you set your power is entirely up to you. Some set their clubs to get max distance; others adjust the assistance to get their real life yardages in the game.

Keep in mind, too, that having your wedges at high power assistance may get you full distance or more, but may result in the ball to coming off very hot around the greens. Dialing in the settings that work best for you will be an investment of time, but the payoff is well worth it.

NOTE: Other than changing club length and face rotation, you cannot make any adjustments to, or swap clubs during a handicap eligible round. You can adjust the length of your clubs by going to Settings/Controls/Adjust Clubs. Push forward on the thumbstick to lengthen the club; pull back on the thumbstick to shorten the club. You can adjust all clubs at once or one at a time.

Setting Up your Clubs

Once you calibrate your clubs for power, you will want continue dialing in the settings that work best for your swing type. The following are the additional options that you can adjust.

NOTE: You do not have to click and drag the slider itself. You can click on the word Fade/Draw, Push/Pull etc., in order to move the sliders up and down.

Draw/Fade Bias: If your shots curve to the left or right, this setting can help mitigate that. You will have to use trial and error to determine the optimal settings for you. The best way to accomplish this is to go to a hole (Cliffs 1 from the back tees works well), hit a few shots with each club using mulligans, and adjust the slider until you are happy with your shots. If your shots tend to curve to the right, move the bias slider to the left until you see your shots going straight. If your shots curve to the left, move the slider to the right.

Push/Pull Adjustment: A draw or fade typically starts out straight but then curves to the left or right. A push or pull goes immediately left or right off the clubface. You can use this slider to adjust how the ball comes off the clubface and help reduce pulls and pushes.

Chipping Feel: This is a club agnostic setting that kicks in at a club speed of approximately 35mph or less. You can use the slider to set how hard or soft the ball comes off the club at this club speed.

Chipping Note: Be mindful that if your swing is more than 35mph, the game views it as a full swing so if you have your power assistance percentage cranked up, the ball will come off quite hot around the green. For this reason, especially in the case of the wedges, you should try to set the power assist on your wedges to the lowest possible percentage that still enables you to get full or close to full yardage. It will lessen the heat when you take shorter swings that are over the chipping feel cap.

Sand Feel:  Similar to chipping feel, this is also club agnostic and adjusts the feel of the ball coming out of the sand. Practicing in bunkers using mulligans and adjusting this slider will help you find the feel that's right for you.

Putting Feel: This setting determines how hot or soft the ball comes off your putter.

NOTE: Chipping Feel, Sand Feel, and Putting Feel sliders are located in the Global tab.

Adjusting Club Length: you can adjust the length of your clubs by going to Settings/Controls/Adjust Clubs. Push forward on the thumbstick to lengthen the club; pull back on the thumbstick to shorten the club. You can adjust all clubs at once or one at a time.

Rotating the Club Face: You can rotate the club face by pushing right or left on the thumbstick.

NOTE: Be mindful when changing club length that you don't accidentally rotate the club face.

Swapping out Clubs

Once you have earned enough credits, you can purchase additional clubs, balls, shafts and grips. You do this by clicking on the Golf Bag in the right side menu and choosing Show All Items. Once you purchase a new item, it will automatically be equipped. If you'd like to switch back or to another item, click the choice in the menu (irons, driver, balls, etc.) and click Equip on the item you want to use. You are unable to swap clubs or equipment during a round.

NOTE: Irons from the 3 to the PW cannot be swapped out individually at this time, but you can swap out any other club for a hybrid, a gap wedge, or different degree wedge as long as you have purchased them. Once you click Equip on the item you'd like to add to your bag, you will be asked to select which club you'd like to swap for it.

Game Settings/Preferences

IMPORTANT NOTE: GOLF+ uses the A button to recenter, not the Oculus/Meta button. You can hold your club out in front of you and hold A, or you can point at the ground where you'd like the ball to be placed and hold A. The circle you see on the ground is where the ball will be placed.

The following are all the choices on the in-game menus:

Game Menu

Quest 3 quality slider: This slider will up the graphics quality for Quest 3 users. This may result in a performance decrease so experiment with the slider to find what works best for you. Also, keep in mind that this may affect battery life.

Snap rotational amount: When on the course, moving the thumbstick left or right will snap turn you in the game. You can choose to turn 5, 10, 20 or 45 degrees.

Always show green contours: You can have the contours on the green showing at all times with this setting turned on.

Club Selection Mode Options:

Default: You'll be given the club with yardage closest to what you need without regard to lie or elevation.

None: You are on your own to choose your club after every shot.

Smart: You will be given a club that takes into account the lie and the elevation, but not the wind.

Fast forward: When this option is checked, holding the trigger will speed up the ball.

Hide the flag on the green: No flag once your ball is on the green. Ever. You can remove the flag on a hole by hole basis by leaving this unchecked and choosing the Remove Flag option on the left side of the screen.

Fade trail: When this is checked, your ball trail will fade out over time.

No trail on the green. This will hide the trail when putting.

Rotate the ball: This hides the logo on the ball.

Edit your avatar: If you'd like to change your Meta avatar, you can jump to that right from inside the game.

UI Menu

High resolution game UI: Turning this on results in the in-game screen being much more clear.

Hide the menu: Checking this option will hide the in game screen. You can show the screen by pressing and holding the side trigger.

In-game notifications: If this option is checked, you will receive notifications while in multiplayer games (invites, etc.)

Controls/Attachments

The Controls section has the following options:

Playing lefty: To play left handed, just pick up your left controller and hit the trigger.

If you prefer to play with the opposite controller, pick up that controller and click "Play lefty/righty with this controller."

Attachments: There are many different brands and types of attachments available. What's best for one player, may not be best for another due to individual priorities regarding weight, playspace, etc. so it's important that you understand the options. Some players add lead fishing line to add weight to controllers that are sold without weights. This can work well since the weight can be customized to what feels right to you.

Quest 2: The Quest 2 can use any available attachment and there are many to choose from. You can read about the popular attachments for the Quest 2 here.

Quest 3: It's important to understand how the Q3's tracking system differs from the Quest 2. The absence of a halo of LEDs on the Q3 controller limits the tracking field if the controller face is pointed at the ground. For this reason, club attachments that orient the controller with the face pointing at the headset cameras are the way to go.

If you are using a Quest 3, check this page for attachments that are designed for use with the Quest 3. Some of them will also work with the Quest 2.

Setting up an attachment: The game has several presets for currently available adapters for both the Quest 2 and Quest 3 in the Controls section of the settings. If you do not see your attachment listed, you can try various other branded attachments that look similar to yours to see if they work well for you.

If you find one that is close but not perfect, you can choose that attachment and then choose the Custom option and further customize that preset for your particular attachment. The best way to set up your custom club is to walk to the edge of your boundary until you can see both the in-game club and your real world club. Then press the side trigger on the controller and move it to line it up with the in-game controller as best you can. It will take a bit of trial and error to get it lined up right but it's definitely doable.

It is strongly suggested that if you use the Custom option to set up your club that you take pictures of the in-game controller on the shaft when done. This will give you a reference point should you lose your preset for any reason or switch between attachments.

TIP: When using an attachment, you do not have to press the side trigger to see the distance to the pin, wind gauge, green contours, etc. during rounds. Point  your club straight up in the air and these will become visible.

Navigating the Game

Navigating the game with the controllers:

Trigger: Pressing the trigger while your shot is in flight it will follow your ball. Once the ball stops, the trigger will move you into position to take your next shot.

Side Trigger: Pressing the side trigger will show a lot of information:

TIP: When using an attachment, you do not have to press the side trigger to see the distance to the pin, wind gauge, green contours, etc. during rounds. Point your club straight up in the air and this information will become visible.

A/X: The A button is used to recenter in GOLF+. Point the controller straight ahead to center the screen in front of you. If you have a smaller space, and find yourself drifting, you can point your controller straight at the ground and hold A to place the ball. You should briefly see a glowing circle on the ground that gets replaced with your ball.

B/Y: The B button is used to open the close the menus.

Thumbstick: Forward is used to teleport.

Pull back to go into Giant mode. (Giant mode will put your avatar high in the air so you can watch others' shots and/or teleport around the course.)

Left and right are used to snap turn.

General Game Info

Difficuly Levels: Novice

Novice: This is the easiest setting. You have both a Shot Shaper and Putt Line. The Shot Shaper can be controlled by hitting B/Y and using the thumbstick to move the target to the area in which you want the ball to land. Once the shot shape is set, the game will strongly encourage the ball to start and stay on the shot line when hit. The game will also heavily coax the ball to start and stay on the putt line.

Difficuly Levels: Amateur

Amateur mode is a mid-level difficulty. The game coaxes your ball to stay on line for both regular shots and putts, but less so than on Novice.  There is no putt line in Amateur. No matter which version below you use, you get the same amount of assist.

Currently Available Options on Amateur Mode:

V1 Physics with the Shot Shaper

In this mode, you have a power meter above your clubs in the game that can be adjusted at any time during rounds. The Shot Shaper window allows you to adjust the target with the thumbstick and move it to the desired location where you want your ball to land. You can also drag the marker on the golf ball to add spin, draw or fade.

---------------------------

V2 Physics with  Shot Shaper On:

With the Shot Shaper turned on, the line on your ball will-- for the most part-- be pointed at the pin. This is not always the best route to take. With the Shot Shaper turned on, you will see a white target on the course that you can move with the thumbstick, place it where you want your ball to land, and adjust your stance accordingly. This may persuade you to play smarter golf, but you can still pin hunt if that's your thing.

As you move the circle, your club will change to the one needed to reach the target. The built-in assist in Amateur will always encourage your ball stay online but you still have to hit your shot. If you find yourself in the rough or sand and have Smart club selection chosen in Settings, the game will select a club for you taking into account all elements: lie, elevation and wind.

The Shot Shaper also gives you the option to adjust draw, face and spin by dragging the marker on the golf ball on the SS screen. Again, this will not make the shot for you, but AM will provide a bit of coaxing to the ball.

---------------------------

V2 Physics with Shot Shaper Off:

With the Shot Shaper turned off, there will be no white target and the line on the ball will-- for the most part-- be facing the pin. You'll be on your own to manage your shots and aim accordingly. Further, if you land in the rough or sand, only lie and elevation will be taken into account if you have Smart club selection chosen in Settings so you'll need to make whatever allowance you think is needed to accommodate the wind speed and direction.

---------------------------

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you have set up your clubs via the Swing menu in V2 physics using biases, push/pull, etc. and play Amateur with the Shot Shaper turned on, your club settings from the Swing menu are in effect in addition to any change that you make on the Shot Shaper menu.

Difficuly Levels: Pro

Pro: Pro is the hardest setting in the game. Once you set up your clubs with the appropriate power and settings, there is no assistance. It's all on you. It can be jarring to go from AM to Pro.

Currently Available Modes on Pro

V1 Physics

In this mode, you have a power meter above your clubs in the game that can be adjusted at any time during rounds.

V2 Physics

In this mode, there is no power meter above your clubs. All of your club settings are calibrated and adjusted via the Swing menu. You are unable to change any of your club settings outside of club length and face rotation (these can be changed in Settings/Controls/Adjust Clubs) during a handicap eligible round. In this mode, you may choose how clubs are selected for your next shot. There are three options:

Default: This setting will give you the club that is nearest the yardage to the pin.

None: This setting will force you to choose your own club.

Smart: This option will give you the club that takes into account both the lie and elevation. It does not take the wind into account so you'll have to determine whether you have enough club based on the current wind speed and direction.

Single Player

Round / Stroke Play: Golf's default scoring system. Each stroke is counted, and your score for each hole is relative to the hole's par.

Closest to the Pin: Hit 1 shot on 9 different holes, scoring points based on your distance from the hole. Compete for the top score on our leaderboard, and see how low you can go!

Quick Play: Click Quick Play on the main menu to be taken into a 9 hole round on a random course and settings. In this mode, you are able to choose the green speed.

Weekly Challenges: Every Monday, a new set of Challenges are posted inside the game that vary in number. You can choose to play them on Novice, Amateur or Pro. If you complete all challenges on Novice, you will get 5 stars; Amateur will earn you 10 stars; and Pro will earn you 15 stars. You can mix and match difficulties so if a particular challenge is proving difficult, you can complete it on a lower difficulty and it will unlock the next challenge on all difficulties. You can use the stars you earn to play beyond the daily freebie in the mini games. The maximum number of stars you can get on the challenges for the week is 15.

Battle Mode: Battle Mode pits you against shots from real players' previous rounds that have been recorded. You are not playing a live opponent. You play 3 holes (a par 3, a par 4 and a par 5) on a random course and settings with fast greens. The lowest cumulative score wins. If there is a tie, a single shot, closest to the pin will decide the winner. If you beat a player ranked higher than you, you get more points. If you lose to someone with a lower rank, you lose more points.  You can speed up your opponent's shots by clicking the Menu button and choosing one of the two speed up options to move things along.

Mini Games: There are four mini games: Driving, Approach, Chipping, and Putting. You get one free try at these per day. The goal is to successfully complete each one before running out of shots. If you want to try again, you can purchase additional tries with the stars that you have earned in other game modes, most notably the Weekly Challenges.

Round Settings

Course Select: Click anywhere on the “Choose Course” image to select a different course.

Affect Handicap: If this box is checked, the round will affect your handicap unless you use a mulligan. If unchecked, it will have no impact on your handicap, which can be useful if you’re just practicing.

Holes: Select between the front 9, back 9, or 18 holes.

Difficulty: Choose Novice, Amateur or Pro.

Tees: There are three tee settings: Front, Middle, and Back.

Pins: Each course has three pin settings: Easy, Medium, and Hard. Hard pins can be very challenging, so we recommend playing Easy or Medium until you’re comfortable with the course.

Wind: There are three wind settings: Low, Moderate, and High. Low wind has minimal impact on the ball, and High wind has a significant impact on the ball flight. Moderate is in between. There is a wind gauge by your ball that can be accessed using the side trigger.

Green Speed: There are four green speeds. They do not currently impact the leaderboard, but do impact the adjusted par for the course.

Medium: Medium is similar to a semi-private course; about 8.5 stimp.

Fast: Fast is similar to a nice course; about 10.5 stimp.

Very Fast: Just under Tour speed. About 11.5 stimp.

Pro: Pro is what the Tour players are used to; about 12.5 stimp. Proceed with caution!

Single Hole Practice: You can also practice on any hole on any course by choosing a Single Player round and changing the dropdown on the top of the settings page to Practice. Once you switch, you'll have the opportunity to choose any hole to practice and the rest of the settings. After you hole out, you can repeat that hole, or choose another.

Multiplayer

IMPORTANT NOTE: All players in a multiplayer game do not need to own the course chosen. As long as the host of the game owns the course, everyone can play it.

Clicking Multiplayer on the main menu will give you the following options:

Join Game: Join a private game by entering the room name given to you by a friend.

Public Games: Find a game that’s listed publicly or choose your settings and set up your own. This is a great way to meet new people and play golf together!

Create a Game: Create a game using a room name and game settings. The room name can be shared with friends to allow up to three other people to join you. While creating a game, you can invite up to three players from your friends list. Selecting Yes for Allow friends to join from friends list will enable people on your friends list to easily join your game. Offline friends can be invited and will see their invitation when their game loads.

Difficulty: As explained in the Game Difficulties section, there are three difficulties in the game: Novice, Amateur, and Pro. When setting up a multiplayer round, the host of the game may choose to check the Allow Any boxes in some or all of the settings for the round. This will allow players of varying skill levels to play together as all players will be free to choose their own difficulty and game settings.

Tees: There are three tee settings: Front, Middle, and Back

Fast: Fast is similar to a nice course; about 10.5 stimp.

Very Fast: Just under Tour speed. About 11.5 stimp.

Pro: Pro is what the Tour players are used to; about 12.5 stimp. Proceed with caution!

Standard Turns or Unrestricted: When setting up a multiplayer game, the host may choose one of these options:

Standard Turns: players hit their shots in order, furthest away first.

Unrestricted: players can hit their shots at any time and move on to other holes as they like.

Disconnections: If you are playing in a multiplayer round and lose connection, you can rejoin your group after relaunching the app. You will be prompted to Rejoin when the app opens, or you can click multiplayer and then the room name where you were. If the round was set to Standard Turns, your group will have to wait until you catch up to them and the game can continue.

Muting Yourself and/or Others: You can mute yourself or other players during a multiplayer round by clicking the avatar on the left side of the in-game screen and selecting Mute. Reverse the process to unmute.

Multiplayer Game Modes:

Round/Stroke Play: Golf's default scoring system. Each stroke is counted, and your score for each hole is relative to the hole's par.

Knockout: Start on a random hole and compete in a “sudden death” playoff. If you match the best score on the hole, you will move on. Otherwise you’ll be knocked out and spectate until a winner is decided. This is a quick game mode designed for the host to initiate quick rematches, with the game keeping track of each player's knockout wins for the entire session.

Closest to the Pin: Each player hits 1 shot on 9 different holes, scoring points based on their distance from the hole. Compete against your friends and see how low you can go!

Stableford: A point-based mode where players earn points based on their total strokes for each hole. More points are better, with point values ranging from 6 for a condor (-4 on a hole) to 0 for a double bogey or worse. This mode can allow players with “blow-up holes” to remain competitive in a round.

Skins: A point-based mode where the lowest score on a hole wins a point (a.k.a. “the skin”). If two or more players tie for low score, the skin carries over to the next hole, allowing a player to win multiple skins on one hole.

Match Play: A point-based mode where the lowest score on a hole wins a point. Unlike skins, a tie for low score does not carry over the point to the next hole.

TIP: At this time, you are not able to practice with friends in the official practice areas, however, if you open a multiplayer game and do not click Start Game, you can move around to any hole on the course and practice with friends.

TIP: While the game does not have a Pass and Play mode, you can set up a practice round and keep score on paper: have one person play Hole 1 and when finished, go back to the tee and pass the headset, etc. You can cast the headset to your device to watch everyone. To learn how to cast from your headset, check out this page.

Practice Modes

The game has an expansive practice area. All practice areas are on Pro difficulty. You can work on any part of your game and choose a difficulty level. If you flip on the Advanced switch on the top right, you will be given more granular control over the type of shot you'd like to practice:

Range: This is a free range area in which you can hit any and all clubs, teleport around and drop a ball where you'd like to hit from. This is the only practice area in which you will not earn XP.

TIP: While on the practice range, you can teleport around and drop a ball anywhere to practice.

Driving: Dial in your driving by shaping your shots through three rings.

Approach: Choose your difficulty, distance, lie, wind and elevation and work on your irons game.

Greenside: Having trouble chipping? Hop into Greenside and choose from very short to longer shots from the sand, fairway or rough and work out the kinks in your short game.

Putting: Uphill putts coming up short? Sideways breaks driving you mad? Set up any type of putt you'd like and practice, practice, practice.

Swing Analyzer: Use the feedback from the analyzer to work on your swing.

You can use mulligans to repeatedly practice shots you have a tough time with on a particular course.

TIP: At this time, you are not able to practice with friends in the official practice areas, however, if you open a multiplayer game and do not click Start Game, you can move around to any hole on the course and practice with friends.

TOPGOLF Las Vegas

Welcome to TOPGOLF Las Vegas. You and up to seven others can meet up in a private bay, crank up some tunes and play. You can also hop into a public bay and play with others.

TOPGOLF: Level the playing field with the game that started it all. Players of all skill levels can score points by hitting balls into any target.

Top Practice: No rules. No structure. Just let loose and practice your shots by aiming at any of the targets

Top Pressure: The pressure is on to land a ball in each of the 9 sections of the Yellow target to advance to the next level.

Quick 9: In this freaky, fast game, hit 3 shots into each of the Brown, Blue, and White targets with the 3rd shot into each target being worth double.

Top Chip: For fans of the short game, chip 5 shots into the Red target, 5 shots into the Yellow target, and 10 shots into the Green target in order.

Viewing Advanced Shot Data

After hitting a shot, you can see detailed information by clicking the Advanced button under the shot information window. If you are not familiar with this data, this website gives a great explanation:

Earning XP and Leveling Up

When you play GOLF+, you can earn XP in just about every game mode, including practice. You will earn the most by playing handicap eligible rounds (rounds played with no mulligans and played to completion with the Affect Handicap button checked).

This XP accumulates and as you reach certain milestones, you will level up. Each time you level up,  you will earn credits that you can use to purchase additional equipment in the game. At each level up to 50, additional clubs, balls, shafts and grips are unlocked. You can also purchase credits, but you will still need to level up by playing in order to unlock the equipment you wish to buy. Outside of a few extra yards on a driver or two, and the ball coming off a little bit hotter from mallet putters, additional equipment is purely cosmetic.

Handicaps/Adjusted Par

Handicap Eligible Rounds: A round is only included in handicap calculations if you have the Affects Handicap box checked when starting a round and do not use any mulligans. You are unable to uncheck the Affects Handicap box in tournaments.

Calculating Your Handicap: Values are provided for your handicap at all three difficulties: Novice, Amateur, and Pro. Your handicap is a number representative of what you'd shoot on your best days rather than an average of your rounds. GOLF+ follows the World Handicap System, considering your last twenty 18-hole rounds and using the best eight to calculate your handicap. Pairs of 9-hole rounds are combined to form 18-hole rounds, and scores are capped at a maximum of a net double bogey per hole. GOLF+ provides graphs of your handicap history over your last twenty rounds and the breakdown of your current handicap, which you can view on the stats section of the GOLF+ website.

Adjusted Par: GOLF+ adjusts the course rating to reflect different pin, tee, wind speed, and green speed settings. On a real golf course, scorecards don't assign a different rating based on anything but tee location, since players do not have control over these different conditions. If the course’s greenskeeper cuts a green shorter and then tucks the flag into a tough pin position, a hole might play much harder that day than the next despite still having the same rating. You can get a sense for the difficulty of each combination of settings by looking at the adjusted par value that is displayed when starting a round. Adjusted par is our estimate of the score that we expect a scratch (0 handicap) golfer to shoot if they are playing well on the selected settings.

You can see the Adjusted Par for the course on the course panel when setting up a round, and also on the Ready up screen when you join a multiplayer game.

NOTE: The Differential in the final column of your rounds page is your score in relation to the adjusted par for that course and those settings.

Leaderboards

Clicking the Leaderboard icon on the bottom right of the in-game screen enables you to see player rankings from all the different game modes sorted either Globally or Friends only.

You can play back video replays of All Time and Weekly Top Shots, and see records on Stroke Play, Speed Run, CTTP, Handicap, Strokes Gained, XP and Knockout.

Adding GOLF+ Friends

You can add friends directly in GOLF+ in the following ways:

Visibility: By default you will appear Online to your friends. If you’d rather play solo, you can set your status as Away. While Away, you will not be able to receive game invites from friends.

Remove a Friend: Click the 3 vertical dots to the right of a friend’s username, then click Remove Friend.

Joining a Friend's Game: If a friend’s game is joinable and they haven’t started their round yet, you can join them directly from the friend menu.

You can also add GOLF+ friends right from the game's Discord server by right clicking a username, selecting Apps, and choosing Add Friend. On a mobile device, press on a name, choose Apps, and select Add Friend.

Replays

Located in your Profile inside the game is a replay button that enables you to view your best shots and those of your friends from the past 100 days. Shots are ranked by strokes gained, but there are also additional filters.

You can record these replays or replays of shots that you take during rounds by clicking the Oculus/Meta button, clicking Start Recording, and playing back your shots. You can sync them to your mobile device or upload them to Discord or other sites via the in headset browser.

NOTE: Your best shots in the Replay list will only be from handicap eligible rounds so if you get a hole in one while practicing or in a game in which you've taken a mulligan, it won't show there so if you want to capture the moment, you'll have to play back the replay and record it yourself. See the next section for how to do that.

Recording Gameplay

As mentioned in the Replay section, the only shots that will appear in your profile under Replay will be shots from handicap eligible rounds, which are full 9 or 18 hole rounds with the Affect Handicap box checked, and in which no mulligans were taken. If you are practicing or playing a non-handicap eligible round and would like to save a shot, you can manually record it to your headset and move it off later.

IMPORTANT: Once you trigger to your next shot, your opportunity to record a Replay is gone.

Once you hit the Replay button, you can record your shot from any angle, from the ground or giant mode, etc. You can teleport around in Replay mode to get the best view. To record it, click the Oculus/Meta button and choose Start Recording, play back your shot as many times as you'd like and then stop the recording.

You can move images and videos off the headset by sync'ing them to your mobile device or sharing to one of the available options that pop up when you click Share. You can also connect your headset to a PC and drag the files off, or log into Discord in the headset browser and use that to upload pics. This is especially convenient if you are reporting an in-game issue and would like to include the media in the bug report.

Media Player

The Media Player has a link to YouTube, a web browser, some preset music stations, help videos and direct links to golf lessons online that you can watch on the course and work on your game. Through the web browser, you may be able to log into subscriptions that you have, but some may not work due to issues outside of the GOLF+ folks' control. The preset music channels are links to existing playlists, and if they are taken down, some of the links may not work.

You can choose to hide the media player if you are just playing music during your round, or you can turn on the Show Player switch on the bottom left and the screen will be placed above the game screen. At this time, you are unable to share your music with the other players in your group.

When using the web browser, you may need to zoom in on some pages that render very small.

Tour/Tournaments

Playing on the Tour

GOLF+ has a weekly tournament that is part of a larger Tour event in which you accumulate points on a weekly basis. You can enter the tournament inside the game by clicking on the Tour panel. When joining, you must choose between Amateur and Pro. You cannot play both difficulties simultaneously. You can switch difficulties, but if you've started on one difficulty and change to another, the change will take effect with the next week's tournament.

To switch difficulties: Click the tournament panel, click Details, and then Settings on the top right.

You will initially start off in the bottom tier and can work your way up by playing well. Course settings increase in difficulty as you move up. At the conclusion of each weekly tournament, you will receive an email containing a recap of your performance. You can read more information about the tiers and your placement and progress on the Tour page on the here

If you are a subscriber to GOLF+ Pass or purchase the course on which the week's tournament is being held, you gain the additional perk of being able to play a practice round on the current settings before your tournament round.

Once you start your tournament round, do not accept an invite to play with others, or leave to play another GOLF+ game mode or you will get a DNF on the leaderboard. If you have connection issues, your battery dies, or if you quit the game via the quit button, you should be able to continue your round after you restart the app. If you do not get this option, please reach out on the GOLF+ Discord for support.

Playing the Daily Tournament

GOLF+ also hosts a Daily Tournament with settings drawn at random. These tournaments work a bit different than the tour, as you will have to use a link to get to them. The Daily can be found by scrolling to the bottom of the Tour page and clicking the desired difficulty level. Once you click the link you can play solo or with friends.

To play Solo: Click the link that's provided and choose Open on your headset. When prompted, put your headset on and you should be brought into the tournament.

To play with Friends: Copy the link that is provided and send it to your friends. Each will need to click the link and then click Open next to their headset. Once everyone is present, you can practice and when ready, the host click Start Game.

NOTE: You cannot play with friends by clicking the tournament link, going into the tournament round, and then using the Invite feature that's inside the game. In order for everyone's scores to post, each player must use the link to get into the round.

Customizing your Avatar on the Leaderboards

You can upload your own avatar that will display on your GOLF+ profile page and tournament leaderboards by setting up an account on Gravatar and uploading your image there. After uploading your image, it can take 24-48 hours to show up.

Your avatar on the in-game screen is pulled from your profile pic in the Meta app. To change this, open the app, go to your profile and click the avatar  icon. You can select from some built in images or use your own.

Other Helpful Info

App Sharing and GOLF+

App sharing is something controlled entirely by Meta, not GOLF+. The following is offered as helpful information that that developers of the game (or any game) are unable to modify. It's provided in order to assist you in decision-making if you are sharing headsets and applies to all games. Check with specific game sources to see if they permit sharing and to what extent.

If you own more than one Quest headset, you can set up app sharing by following the instructions in the link below. Keep in mind that you can only app share with one headset at a time, and that any downloadable content purchased cannot be shared to the secondary account.

Additionally, subscriptions are not shareable. Only the account that purchased the subscription can access the app and contents.

Another Meta (not GOLF+) limitation is that secondary accounts are unable to use the Meta Deep Link to play in the Daily Tournament. Only the primary on the headset can use these links.

Multiple Accounts and App Sharing

What does "Feet of Putts" Mean?

Feet of putts is the total number of feet of your putts that dropped in the game. The higher the number, the better.

Some people ask why the lower number is not better. After all, that shows you had a better approach. It's not about approach. It's about putting. Sinking a couple of 20+ foot putts during a round is a lot more impressive than 4 putting and sinking two footers. Under that scenario the 4 putter would have a better standing in feet of putts for the round since the putts that dropped for them would be such a low number.

Why is it there? It's strictly used as a tiebreaker for the leaderboards. If two players score -10 on a particular course and settings, the one with the higher feet of putts number will be first on the leaderboard.

Why Can't We Hit Fat Shots, etc.?

Here's the content of a GOLF+ Discord post that talks about why there are no ball contact mechanics in the game:

A number of people have requested tops or fat shots. We definitely want to make things as realistic as possible. The margin between a good golf shot and a horribly bladed top is extremely small however and the Quest's  tracking is not always perfect. It would be tough to balance against situations where you took the absolute best swing of your life, but chunked it 30 yards because your floor shifted 1/2in. mid swing .

Fat (hitting the grass to soon) and thin (swinging over the ball) shots are definitely a common request. The inconsistencies with floor level make them difficult to make as strict as real life. Taking a perfect swing only to have a floor move 1/2in mid swing and ruin it would be frustrating.

The club actually stays a consistent length all the time, but your grip can "slide down" if you start getting into an impossible position. In real life the club would physically resist you from pushing it into the ground, but that isn't present in vr.

Fats, thins, and off center could likely be added in theory but wouldn't play out very well. We already have a lot of players that struggle with their floor drifting substantially during rounds. There is probably a lot of tiny shifts to floor that never get noticed, but definitely would the first time you took a perfect swing and your floor shifted 2cm leading to 20 yard top.

Why is there No Smooth Locomotion?

Here's the content of a GOLF+ Discord post that talks about why smooth locomotion is not an option:

Unfortunately won't see smooth locomotion anytime soon. Not strictly something that isn't possible but the way things are set up now it would take a big change to make it comfortable. When you are various distances from an object we swap out the asset for higher or lower quality models to maintain performance. So if you walked a few hundred yards with your headset on you would be able to walk anywhere, but all the textures will be low quality once you get far enough away from your start point.

A good way to see what I mean is to pick a far off tree to focus on. From a few hundred yards it will be a flat lower poly model. As you teleport closer you'll see it switch to better quality inbetween models and eventually a fully 3d, hi res model. If we added in smooth movement without a lot of changes you'd see some really brutal pop-in as those models change.

Is Battle Mode Live?

No, Battle Mode is not Live. You are playing against replays of other players' shots from past rounds.

Reporting Abuse/Harassment

If you experience unacceptable behavior in multiplayer games, you should immediately hit the Record video button on the headset and capture the behavior.  You can use Meta's reporting tool, found by opening the Quick Menu and selecting the Report option. Fill in in the information and attach pictures/video and both the GOLF+ team and Meta will receive this report. You can use this tool to retroactively report something that happened as well.

This page has info on how to block users at the system level so you won't come across them again: Blocking and Unblocking

Beta Testing

Occasionally, GOLF+ will announce an opportunity to become a beta tester. If you wish to apply, please note the following:

How to Get Four in a Picture on the Course

I got lots of inquiries after a pic of some of our players was posted online. If you'd like to get a pic of your group (or yourself) on the course:

After taking a shot, if you do an about face, your avatar will be looking at the camera at the end of the Replay. You can leave that image of yourself there and the other golfers can pose next to and around it. You'll have to direct folks where to stand to get everyone into position, but it works out well. The person taking the pic won't be holding a golf club, but it's still a nice way to get everyone in your group in a pic. If you are so inclined, you can always edit the pic later and put a golf club in your hand.

Troubleshooting

Problems Getting to the Daily Tournament

The links to get into the Daily Tournament are Meta links and the GOLF+ team has no control over them. There are times that the links do not work properly and can be a source of frustration. The following may be helpful if you are having trouble getting in:

I Didn't Get Valhalla after Leaving a Review

If you have followed the steps to get Valhalla and more than 15 minutes have passed, please send a message on Discord so they can look into that for you. Sometimes the bot that unlocks the course is not triggered when reviewed are published from outside the U.S. or not in English.

My Floor is High Above or Below Ground

If your floor level in the game is off, it may be due to a recent Meta software update. These things happen from time to time. To work around the issue, you can manually set the floor level using the thumbstick rather than touching the controller to the ground. You can use this method to compensate for the floor offset until Meta fixes the problem.

From inside any game, open the Oculus/Meta menu, choose Settings, Physical Space, Set Floor Level, and use the thumbstick to move the floor up or down until it looks the way it should in the game.

NOTE: If you have received Meta OS v.64 and have turned on the "Use apps while lying down" option, turn that off as that may cause your floor to be off.  It's been reported by many that play sports games that turning off this option fixes the issue. You may need to restart your headset after turning this option off.

When I Swing I Turn in a Different Direction

What you are experiencing is called Stick Drift. It's a hardware issue that is unrelated to GOLF+.

In the Meta Settings, Controller page, you can increase the dead zone of your thumbstick in order to lower its sensitivity.

If the above is not successful. you can Google "Quest stick drift" and see many videos with potential solutions.

Graphic Environment Looks Weird

If you find upon loading the game that the environment looks strange: broken graphics, distorted images, etc., this is due to a Meta bug that is enabling players to load into the game before all assets and environments are fully installed. If you experience this, an uninstall and reinstall of the game should fix the issue. After reinstalling, wait about 10 minutes before launching the game to ensure it is fully installed.

NOTE: Your club biases, power, feel meters, and custom attachment settings are stored on the GOLF+ server, but it's always a good idea to note these settings as a backup. The most convenient way of doing this is to hit the Meta/Oculus button, choose Start Recording, and record yourself clicking through all of the settings in the Swing Menu. You may also wish to go into the Controls/Custom section and get an image of the virtual club and controller to aid in re-setting up your attachment after a reinstall, as your attachment settings are local to the headset and will be lost if a reinstall is performed.

My Ball Disappeared Underground

If you experience an event in which your ball goes underground, please take a picture or two of the location. A wide shot that shows the area and a pic of the ball on the map are helpful. You can post these images in the Bug Report channel in the game's Discord community, or email them to help@golfplusvr.com

As for hitting your ball, once you trigger to your ball's location, press the side trigger and note the position of the wind gauge.Your ball is centered just below that wind gauge and a swing in that area should get the ball out.

Web Browser View is Tiny

If you find that the web browser appears tiny when trying to use an online service, use the magnifying glass on the bottom right of the screen to zoom in and resize the text so it's readable.

My Clubs are too Short

If you find that your clubs are too short or too long, your first action should be to re-do your guardian floor. This typically fixes the issue.  If you find that your floor looks off, you can use the thumbstick to adjust the floor level up or down.

If you are very tall and find the clubs to be short when extended to the max, you can go to Settings/Controls and choose Custom. This will bring up your virtual club and controller. You can press the side trigger and move the virtual controller further up on the grip to gain some extra length. It's important that you try to keep the virtual controller in the same position where it started and just move it straight up as best you can.

I Can't Hear My Friends or They Can't Hear Me

If you find that you are unable to hear others in the game, or they are unable to hear you, try these suggestions:

Open the Meta menu and click on the battery to bring up the Quick Settings. Ensure that your microphone is not muted there. Sometimes, after a Meta update installs, it mutes your microphone.

Open the Meta menu and bring up the GOLF+ game panel, click the three dots on the right side and choose See Permissions. Make sure the game has access to the microphone.

If neither of these options fix the issue, you can open a Party Chat via the People Menu and chat throughout the game that way.

Note: You must be Meta/Oculus friends with all players in order to join them in a party chat.

Clubs Floating Away/Swings and Misses

If your club is floating away or begins to move around on its own, this could be attributable to several things:

Reporting Bugs/Issues

In order for the GOLF+ team to better address issues that occur, it is extremely helpful if when reporting a problem that you include the following information:

To record a replay, after your shot click Replay on the bottom left of the screen before you trigger to your next shot; press the Oculus/Meta button and choose Start Recording; press Play on the Replay bar. (You can go into Giant mode, or teleport to get a better vantage point, move the slider back and capture multiple Replays.

The more detailed the report, the better.

Who Am I? (Top Row, Second from Left)

I'm Cvan65 and have been playing VR golf for a long time and before that was hooked on every golf video game that existed. I was lucky and fortunate to be part of the beta for full course GOLF+ before it was released and I knew immediately that it was a winner. Watching it evolve over the past few years is something I'm so glad to be part of. You can usually find me hanging out on the GOLF+ Discord.

This site was originally built to feature the large array of club attachments that can cause some pretty serious decision fatigue when shopping. After joining the moderation team at GOLF+, I thought having some of the most frequently asked questions in one place would be helpful to players old and new. So my Unofficial Guide was born. You can get to my attachments section from the Home page.

My favorite courses in the game are TPC Sawgrass, Bay Hill, Pinehurst No.2, Pebble Beach, and TPC Southwind.

Headset of choice is the Q3 with the Elite Battery Strap, a third battery in a waist belt for longer gaming sessions, Pro controllers and running Quest Games Optimizer.  I'm a Scratch Pro and  swap between the newest 24" Yezro and the RM Designs V3 with the 12" extended weight. Cheers!
